Whale Watching in Hermanus: A Front-Row Seat to Nature’s Greatest Show at Little Villa

One of the most unforgettable experiences when staying at Little Villa Hermanus? Watching whales dance in the bay.

Every year, between June and November, the coastline transforms into a stage for Southern Right whales, who migrate to the sheltered bays of Hermanus to calve, mate, and play in the warmer waters. It’s magical, humbling, and something everyone should witness at least once.

And the best part? You don’t even need to get on a boat to see them.

Why Hermanus is the Whale Watching Capital of South Africa

Hermanus is world-famous for its land-based whale watching. Thanks to the town’s elevated cliffs and crystal-clear waters, you can spot whales right from the shoreline, often just a few meters from where you’re standing.

From tail slaps and breaching to those slow, graceful movements across the bay – the spectacle is both peaceful and wild.

When to Visit

  • Peak Season: August to October
  • Best Months: September and early October offer the most sightings
  • Off-Peak Surprises: You might still see whales as early as June or as late as November

Top Whale Watching Spots Near Little Villa

Here are some of our favourite nearby places to watch the whales roll in:

1. The Cliff Path

Stretching for 12km along the coast, the Hermanus Cliff Path is a treasure trove of viewpoints. Take your morning coffee and head out for a walk – whales are often spotted near Gearings Point or Sievers Point, just a short stroll from Little Villa.

2. Old Harbour

This historic harbour offers stunning views over the bay, and whales love to play in this calm cove. There’s also a small museum and lookout point if you want to learn more.

3. Voëlklip & Grotto Beach

Combine a beach day with a bit of whale spotting. Voëlklip has elevated grassy banks perfect for picnics and binoculars, while Grotto Beach is ideal for long walks and ocean views.

Boat-Based Whale Watching

If you want to get closer, we can help you book a boat tour with a licensed operator. These trips offer an intimate, respectful look at these incredible creatures in their natural environment.

🚤 Tours typically last 2 hours and include a marine guide
📍 Depart from New Harbour, about 10 minutes from Little Villa

Insider Tips from Little Villa

  • Bring binoculars – we keep a pair at the villa just in case!
  • Early mornings are often the calmest and clearest for spotting activity.
  • The Hermanus Whale Festival happens annually in late September and is worth timing your stay around – live music, eco talks, food stalls, and more.

A Whale of a Stay

There’s something deeply moving about watching a 40-ton whale breach against the backdrop of mountains and sea. Whether you see one from your spot on the cliff path or out on a boat with the wind in your hair, whale season in Hermanus is unforgettable.

And at the end of the day, you’ll return to Little Villa – your cozy hideaway by the sea – with a full heart and (hopefully) a few whale tales to tell.
